PNC Financial Services (2003)

PNC's corporate and online banking Web sites form the foundation of a very large Web presence that is accessed by tens of thousands of people every day. In order to be successful, this site had to perform flawlessly within very stringent guidelines.

Overview

  • Size: 40 sections, over 2500 pages
  • Complexity: HTML, Java, Javascript, Perl, CSS
  • Maintenance: Daily

Challenges:

  • To create a compelling family of Web sites that integrated the company's branding and marketing messages for an online audience.
  • To work within rigid technical guidelines for browser support, support for the visually impaired, high security, and bandwidth restrictions.
  • To create an appealing design with intuitive navigation and first-class online banking experiences.

Creating PNC's family of Web sites took a high degree of skill and effort from a dedicated staff in IT, marketing, and the Web Department. Beginning only with a new corporate logo and branding initiative, extensive wire framing and mock-ups helped to refine designs that met a range of sometimes opposing requirements from various stakeholders. The resulting sites flowed smoothly and intuitively through the use of standardized navigation, a predictable screen flow, and online banking experiences that highlighted the use of new technologies for consumer convenience.

This major site-wide redesign also include the creation of a new online business banking portal, which was rated as the "Fourth Best Business Banking Web Site in North America".
