RAND Intranet (2007)

RAND's Intranet site had been created haphazardly over nearly a decade. As a result, there was no consistency of design, code or technology. A complete overhaul was needed in order to make sense of a highly complex site.

Overview

  • Size: Approx. 75 sections, over 7000 pages
  • Complexity: HTML, CSS, .NET, AJAX, RSS, Javascript, Perl
  • Maintenance: Daily

Challenges:

  • To provide navigation and design consistency throughout.
  • To weed out old content and update content with valid coding.
  • To provide staff with new Web 2.0 technologies in order to increase collaboration and participation.

Based on the results of multiple surveys and focus groups, new technologies such as RSS feeds, blogs, wikis and SharePoint were implemented in order to satisfy a growing demand for collaborative applications. This intranet redesign involved all aspects of the company, with an emphasis on partnering with IT/Network Services to provide important infrastructure updates.
